What it means

This hand does not use the usual four sets and a pair. It is a fixed group of terminal and honour tiles.

Why it is special

You must collect all 13 required tile types, then pair one of them.

How it works

  1. Keep the 1 and 9 of all three suits.
  2. Keep all four Winds and all three Dragons.
  3. Complete one of each of those thirteen tile types.
  4. Use the fourteenth tile to duplicate one of them.

Watch out for

  • Do not try to split the hand into ordinary Chows and Pungs.
  • The extra tile can match any one of the 13 required tile types.

What it means

BMJA calls this Heaven’s Blessing. Buzzard calls it Original Hand and also records the historical names Hand from Heaven and Natural Winning.

Why it is special

East wins from the original deal, before any ordinary draw or discard.

How it works

  1. East receives the initial hand.
  2. The hand is already a legal Mahjong.
  3. The win is recorded as the original-deal event.

Reference note

The Buzzard source says East wins with a complete hand from the original deal. BMJA uses the phrase “Mah Jong in original deal”; the historical names do not prove that all rules use the same event.
